Our Top 5 Favorite Fitness Apps
We love the fact that most fitness and weight loss apps provide real-time feedback because that accountability helps us all make better decisions. And now research supports using apps to get us in shape. A recent Northwestern University study reported that using a mobile app as part of your weight-loss strategy can help you drop as much as 15 pounds and keep it off for at least a year.
But honestly, there are hundreds of these fitness and weight loss apps, how can one possibly decide which ones are the right fit?
Well, now we’re weighing in (haha) with a lineup of our favorite fitness apps:
Fitocracy – This app was developed by two former out-of-shape video-game addicts and let me tell you that Fitocracy world has become one hot item. There are currently more that one million registered “Fitocrats” that actually playe against each other while they enhance their fitness experiences. In the game, users begin at level one, then depending on the frequency, duration, and difficulty of their workouts, they earn points and bump up to the next level. Free. Availability: iPhone and Android.
Noom – If you like to be told what to do, this is the app for you. Noom will tell you exactly what to do every day by giving you daily weight-loss tasks that are tracked in real-time. Your progress is then graded, which allows the app to continually adjust itself to help you lose weight. Noom is also integrated with Facebook and Twitter so you can get your friends in on the pound-dropping action. Free and In-App Purchases. Availability: iPhone and Android.
Fooducate – How do you really know if that protein bar is healthy? Simple. Scan a food item’s UPC and Fooducate will go beyond the nutrition facts to tell you more about your eatables. For instance, if the sodium level is high or if there are nasty chemicals you should avoid. Fooducate will even give your food a grade relative to other alternatives and then help you make a healthier choice. Free and In-App Purchases. Availability: iPhone and Android.
Diet Point – Get back to the basics with Diet Point. The app claims to have the largest list of diet plans (55 for free, more than 150 for paid users) as well as the largest mobile weight-loss forum. The app comes with BMI and BMR calculators along with real-time meal reminders. Free and In-App Purchases. Availability: iPhone and Android
MyFitnessPal – What’s not to love about an app that has a database of over 2 million foods with calorie counts? The app also syncs with the service’s website, which has a large community where users can exchange weight-loss triumphs and difficulties. Free. Availability: iPhone and Android.
